Varda Space Industries Launches W-7 to Study Cancer Drug Crystallization in Orbit

PR Newswire

The company’s third launch this month will investigate how microgravity can unlock the therapeutic potential of a new class of cancer medicines.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Oct. 20, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Varda Space Industries, the leading microgravity-enabled life sciences and hypersonic reentry company, today launched the W-7 vehicle into orbit. The flight is Varda’s third launch this month and its fourth of 2026, underscoring the company’s rapidly maturing operational cadence and its commitment to making orbital processing a routine part of the drug development pipeline.

W-7 is Varda's third launch this month and fourth of 2026.

The W-7 payload will mix liquids with an active pharmaceutical ingredient to investigate how microgravity can improve drug solubility for patients in a class of next-generation cancer medicines known as PROTACs, or Proteolysis-Targeting Chimeras. Rather than simply blocking disease-causing proteins the way traditional drugs do, PROTACs are designed to co-opt the cell’s own waste-disposal machinery, tagging harmful proteins for complete destruction.

Despite their potential, PROTACs are large, complex molecules that tend to dissolve poorly in biological fluids, making them difficult to formulate into medicines the body can absorb. Poor solubility is one of the leading reasons promising drug candidates fail to become viable treatments.

In the absence of gravity-driven convection and sedimentation, molecules can form crystals with different structures and properties impossible to achieve on Earth, including forms that are significantly more soluble. W-7 will expose a PROTAC compound to microgravity conditions as it crystalizes during its time in orbit. The resulting crystals will return to Earth for analysis on improved solubility, and could translate into a more absorbable, more effective medicine.

If Varda’s W-7 mission demonstrates that microgravity can yield PROTAC crystal forms with meaningfully better solubility profiles, it could open a path toward clinical development for an entire class of compounds that remain difficult to formulate.

“The most sophisticated molecule in the world doesn’t help a patient if it can’t be absorbed by the body,” said Michael Reilly, Chief Strategy Officer at Varda Space Industries. “Varda is finding new ways to make powerful medicines work better for the people who need them. With W-7, we’re testing unique physics of microgravity in pursuit of solving a formulation problem that limits an entire class of cancer drugs.”

By treating low Earth orbit as manufacturing platform available on a routine basis, Varda is enabling the development of the first drug made in space to benefit patients on Earth.
