TOPEKA, Kan., Sept. 8, 2026
TOPEKA, Kan., Sept. 8, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — VitalCore Health Strategies is proud to support the opening of a new 60-bed Behavioral Health Unit at the Shawnee County Jail in Topeka, Kansas, where the company provides healthcare services in partnership with the Shawnee County Department of Corrections. The new unit expands dedicated space for individuals awaiting trial who need mental health, substance use, suicide prevention, competency restoration, and other specialized services.
The $21 million, 23,279-square-foot addition opened on August 24 following a three-year planning and construction process, creating a specialized environment designed to address a range of behavioral and mental health needs. The 60-bed facility incorporates features such as soft furnishings, natural light, and sound-dampening elements designed to create a calmer, more supportive environment for those receiving care.
The Behavioral Health Unit offers three distinct pathways based on individual needs, with programming focused on suicide prevention, competency restoration, and persistent mental illness. Available services and activities include group counseling, cognitive programming, medication support, art and music therapy, and low-impact physical activity.
The new space also incorporates therapeutic and safety features designed to support patient care, including adjustable lighting, safety rooms, and specialized furnishings. The facility was designed and built by HTK Architects, HDR, and Topeka-based KBS Constructors.
“As a native Kansan, and the home base for VitalCore’s Corporate Offices, we are pleased to be a collaborative partner in the clinical stabilization of the at-risk mental health clients in our community,” said Viola Riggin, cofounder and CEO of VitalCore. “This facility will serve as a rehabilitation center to promote family and community safety. I am very proud of the leadership in Shawnee County for understanding and creating a safe place in our community to provide these services.”
VitalCore assumed responsibility for healthcare services for the Shawnee County Department of Corrections in 2024, building on its commitment to providing comprehensive, patient-centered care within the correctional environment. Since taking over the contract, VitalCore has worked to support the evolving healthcare needs of the Shawnee County population. The opening of the new Behavioral Health Unit represents another important step in that ongoing partnership and VitalCore’s commitment to expanding access to specialized behavioral and mental health services.
